Back-to-School Family Checklist

Get ready for a confident and joyful first day of school.

Four weeks before school

Ask your child what they are excited about and what may be making them nervous. Schedule any required medical, dental, or vision appointments. Review the school supply list and purchase needed items. Check that school clothes and shoes still fit. Read together for at least 20 minutes each day. Plan meaningful family time before summer ends. Pray together for the new school year.

Three weeks before school

Move bedtime 15 to 20 minutes earlier every few days. Begin waking up closer to the school-day schedule. Reduce screen time before bed. Visit the library and choose books for the final weeks of summer. Create one more special summer memory together.

Two weeks before school

Label backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, and clothing. Organize school supplies in one place. Talk about making new friends and including others. Discuss classroom expectations in a positive way. Continue daily reading and simple learning activities.

One week before school

Practice the full morning routine. Choose simple breakfast and lunch options. Create a quiet homework and reading space. Complete and submit all required forms.

The day before school

Join the Abundant Life community for a fun evening before the first day.

Attend the School Bash event the night before school starts. Let your child reconnect with friends and meet other families. Take a family photo to remember the beginning of the school year.

The night before school

Pack the backpack and place it near the door. Prepare lunch and snacks if needed. Lay out clothes and shoes. Set alarms and confirm the morning schedule. Choose an early bedtime. Read a favorite bedtime story. Pray together and offer plenty of encouragement.

After the first day

Keep the conversation positive and avoid turning the ride home into an interview.

Ask, “What made you smile today?” Ask, “Was there anything that felt difficult?” Celebrate the first day with a simple family tradition. Thank your child for being brave and working hard. Pray together and celebrate a strong beginning.
